This safety standard adopts most of the content of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard Z26.1. These documents outline the permitted uses of various materials, including plastics, for all types of motor vehicle glazing.
The standard classifies various glazing uses in motor vehicles and provides the test requirements for each class. Classifications 4, 5, 6, and 7 are the only classes which permit acrylic glazing. These four classes are differentiated by flexibility and light transmission characteristics, yet other tests are also required for each class.
Class 4 is for rigid Abrasion Resistant applications with greater than 70% light transmission.
Class 5 is for rigid applications with less than 70% light transmission.
Class 6 is for flexible applications with greater than 70% light transmission.
Class 7 is for flexible applications with less than 70% light transmission.
Class identification is thickness and color dependent. The FMVSS 205 Specification requires that the manufacturer of the glazing be hot stamped on each installed piece using a number assigned by the NHTSB.
Plexiglas® MC and G sheet meet sections AS-5, AS-6, and AS-7 depending on color and thickness. However, they do not meet the Taber Abrasion requirement of section AS-4. Please contact Arkema Sheet Technical Service for more information, including Hot Stamp Identification requirements.
